Attorney Biography
Many people often ask why I chose to focus on bankruptcy law. The answer is simple — it is the only legal field that echoes the very reason I pursued law in the first place: to be a beacon for others during their moments of crisis.
As a professor of law, I often explain to my students that bankruptcy law, in a sense, mirrors the workings of magic. When a bankruptcy petition is submitted, a powerful shield, known as the “automatic stay,” envelops the debtor and their assets. This protective force is so formidable that it halts almost everyone in their tracks, even federal entities like the IRS. Unless a court intervenes, mortgage lenders, debt collectors, and creditors are barred from disturbing the debtor or their possessions.
That said, filing for bankruptcy does not mean one can simply retain their home or vehicle without addressing obligations to secured creditors. A word of caution: bankruptcy is intricate and demands serious consideration. All too often, individuals attempt to navigate the process on their own or fall prey to inexperienced or unscrupulous legal counsel. This misstep can trigger a cascade of hardships — from losing tax refunds and vehicles to forfeiting inheritances and cherished belongings. Most of these losses are preventable with careful planning and, if possible, ample time before filing.
